NewsGroups

Before the Web and web browsers, and before email became common, online communication was just  posting text messages on electronic bulletin boards where others could read and reply to them. Usenet began as a collection of these bulletin boards (now called discussion forums or newsgroups) and started in 1979 Over the years, the number of such newsgroups has grown to the thousands, hosted all over the world and covering every conceivable topic about which humans converse.

With the advent of threaded discussions on Web pages in the last year or so, the heyday of Usenet may be waning. Nonetheless, there are still more than 20,000 Usenet forums, known as newsgroups, many of which remain quite active today.

Usenet is like a river with thousands of tributaries. The main threads in the river lead to the top-level discussion (such as "alt"). Follow one of the river's thread and you'll come to smaller branches (such as alt.football), which lead to tributaries containing messages divided into even more specific topics (such as alt.football.defender). Ultimately, your journey will take you to the smallest part of the data stream; the part containing messages from people who are interested in one particular topic (such as alt.football.defender.pele).

Deja

The Deja  Web site is a powerful Usenet search engine. Going beyond newsreaders' built-in search capacity for newsgroup names and message titles, Deja  lets you search for words appearing in the text of individual messages across Usenet. Search for your own brand name and see if anyone is saying kind or negative things about you. Or search for terms related to your product to see which newsgroups may be interested in your site.
